I was broke with few options. The military draft was still in effect and wherever I applied for a permanent job, I was asked about my draft status. An answer of 'A1' didn’t get me anymore than, "we'll get back to you."

So one day I was talking with my brother, who was now out of high school with few prospects of his own, and suggested we join the Air Force. We did and that changed everything for both of us.
